The concept of this painting came from a conversation with a friend about how vulnerability is often meet with resistance from those who are threaten it and the courage it takes to stand in your truth regardless of the feedback you may receive. The term stay ugly is a phrase that encourages the act of embracing the “ugly” aspects of ourselves, recognizing that these less polished traits are not flaws to hide, but essential facets of what make us whole.
